We drove for 3 hours Friday night to Banff, Alberta so that we could take full advantage of the day on Saturday.
At 8:15 we were met at our hotel lobby by our tour bus and guide. After driving for 30 minutes we arrived to the base of our trail to go on our Grotto Canyon Ice walk.
The Grotto Canyon Ice walk is a very easy hike up to the canyon and it can be completed in about an hour and a half (depending on how many photos you take along the way.) With our ice cleats attached to our boots, we headed out to the trail.
What is amazing about the Grotto Canyon is that in the summer months the canyon is completely dry. In the winter months, the waterbed below the surface rises above the ground and freezes as high as 5 feet.
After lunch, we headed out to the Banff Springs hotel to go ice skating. The rink was closed due to the snowfall but that didn't stop us from getting a shovel out and clearing the ice.
We finished the night by going out for pizza at one of the local restaurants.
