Feb. 26, 2017
We had an awesome adventure on February 26. Four of us met at the Safeway parking lot, hopped into one car and took Highway 3 all the way to Blairmore.
A friend of mine recommended that I download the Trailforks app, which is an app for finding off-road bike trails, and park at the base of Pass Powderking ski hill. What great advice. The app uses GPS to pinpoint where you are, so all you have to do is follow the trail mapped out on the app. There were a few moments when the app didn't sync, and we did go off the trail to find a shortcut back but overall, the app worked like a charm.
The trail led us up the mountain, at first alongside the road to the ski hill, but it wasn't soon before we were exploring deep in the woods. What I liked about these trails the most was the fact that we were the only ones on the mountain. There was a fresh layer of snow on the ground and there was enough snow on the mountain that it really felt like your own private wonderland.
For those looking to take the less beaten path, explore the backwoods, connect with nature, calm the voices in your head then I would definitely recommend driving out to Blairmore and exploring these trails.
Remember snowshoes are a must for these trails. Even with them on, there were patches when we sank well past our knees.
Members looking to join us on the next snowshoe adventure be sure to come with us on March 12 for a day trip to Waterton. We will be going on a 3 hour adventure to Cameron Lake. If you need snowshoes, visit Lethbridge Public Library and borrow some with your library card.
